All the Details

Equipment -- Gearhead Central

Please be advised that in the event of technodweeb overload, nerd filters will drop from the ceiling, allowing you to breathe normally.

Audio is recorded mostly with 32 tracks of Pro Tools on a Quicksilver Mac 867mHz G4 for multi-track stuff. For MIDI tracks with voiceovers, I use Logic Audio. I have 8 tracks of ADAT, and DAT and Otari open-reel mastering machines, for those who like that sort of thing. Realtime analog mixdown is on a Behringer Eurodesk. FX and signal processing are from Pro Tools, Lexicon, Digitech, ART, dbx and Yahama. Microphones are from Audio-Technica.

MIDI runs from the aforementioned Logic Audio and Pro 5. Sound modules include Reason, Pluggo 3.0, Kurzweil 2500s and 2000s, a Proteus farm, Korg X5DR, Emax SE, Kurzweil MicroPiano, and, of course, the old reliable Memorymoog (you CAN go home again...).

With a few hours' notice, I can rent almost anything a client would need. While not strictly in the "Equipment" category, I have an extensive library of local singers and instrumentalists. Among them is just that special someone to play that merengue harmonica obbligato with the paso doble overfeel that you need for the AT&T spot.

Clients

These are some of the individual and corporate clients with whom I've enjoyed working:

Ameritech
Ameritech is a telecommunications service provider (read:Baby Bell) for the Midwest. They are now a division of SBC.
Intermedia
This is the umbrella for a conglomeration of cable companies from Kauai, Hawaii to Tennessee. My involvement with them has been telling the story of the name change.
Mark Thomsen
Mark was a performer and studio vocalist in the Cleveland/Columbus/Chicago area who did a lot of voiceover and vox work for me (and scads of other people). I had the pleasure of producing his last complete album, "Last Will and Testament", in 1995. Mark died in June 1996 from complications resulting from AIDS. I (and many more) miss him a lot.
The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra
These guys don't record a lot (even though I nag 'em all the time), but they're some of the finest players in the state, if not the US. I am proud to be able to play with them.
The Jack Schantz Jazz Unit
Jack is the director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra (see above), and the Jazz Unit is his laboratory. It's a little big band (13) that plays very experimental stuff. If you're in Cleveland on a Monday night, get over to the Bop Stop. You'll get a new head.
Arhaus Furniture
Arhaus is a manufacturer and distributor of absolutely gorgeous home and exterior furniture. They serve the Upper Midwest and prominent parts of my house...

Rates

Ya gets whatcha pays for, & ya pays for whatcha gets

For the vast majority of projects that I produce, all sounds (except for voice talent and special solo instuments) are produced in-house by your obedient servant. After meeting with the involved parties, I produce several off-line scratch tracks to be used as templates for discussion. After pre-approval, I produce my on-line final.

Commercial projects are almost always handled on a piece-quote basis; for smaller projects, or one-time sessions, the following rates apply:

Off-line composing, sequencing and/or arranging $60/hr
On-line studio services (performing, recording,
sound design, soundtrack editing & manipulation)
$75/hr
Location recording (my basic session geek rate) $100/hr
Talent (additional musicians) quoted
